A People Under Siege: LUO Struggle to Defend Their Land from Nuer Aggression
By Agalo, M (2023)
Gambella people are grappling with the influx of hundreds of thousands of Nuer refugees. Many of these refugees, having overstayed their welcome, are now demanding land. Others have been absorbed into the Ethiopian government system, which is now considering integrating the refugees within the host native Luo population.
An important remark from my informer is that the Nuer have shown blatant disregard for their hosts, committing acts of violence against the Luo and deliberately working to displace them. The LUO must organize — not out of hatred, but out of a duty to protect their land, their people, and their future. The call to defend is not just about territory — it is about survival.
